We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. Hebrews 2:1

You’re out running errands when you run into them–the acquaintance who has said more than once, “Let’s get together for coffee sometime!” but never calls.

We all know it: a person that you spend time with is someone that you care about and want to get to know. The extent to which you invest your energy in a relationship tells whether the relationship is important to you.  It’s no different with your relationship with God. Scripture tells us that “…Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him” (Hebrews 11:6b). It also warns us that, “We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1). “We must…always work at the spiritual life,” wrote a man named Brother Lawrence, “because not to advance, in the spiritual life, is to go back.”[1] Without regular effort to get to know and follow God, we succumb to the downward drift.

Here’s God’s heart for you; He says, “I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me” (Proverbs 8:17 NKJV). So, what does seeking God look like? Seeking Him involves everyday practices like reading or listening to the Bible for yourself, paying attention to what God wants to say to me personally (Joshua 1:9). Seeking God means that I discuss all the things in my life with Him—He tells me to pray about everything (Philippians 4:6a). When I seek God, I also ask Him to show me where He’d like to change me (Psalms 139:23-24).

Fight the downward drift by seeking God today—He’s waiting for you.
