Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven. Psalms 119:89

Ever been on a roller coaster ride? You’re strapped in for an intense time of climbing, dropping, twisting and turning, maybe even flipping upside down.

The “new normal” life can feel a lot like a roller coaster ride. Our world is now “dysregulated”–political and economic crisis and social fragmentation have us grasping for stability and well-being.

As we desperately try to regulate our lives, our minds and emotions, there is one source of relief that is eternally true, tested and life-giving–that source is God’s Word. God’s Word is found in His book, the Bible. His Word encompasses His promises, His instructions and His laws.

Psalm 119 contains a first-hand testimony to the power of God’s eternal, sustaining Word. The Psalm’s writer, David, lived a tumultuous life but declared,

“Your promises have been thoroughly tested; that is why I love them so much…Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven… Your justice is eternal, and your instructions are perfectly true. As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands” (Psalm 119:140, 89, 142-143).

David didn’t just admire scripture; he put it to work. He said, “If your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery. I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life. Though the wicked quietly hide along the way to kill me, I will quietly keep my mind on your laws…I think about them all day long” (Psalms 119:92-93, 95,97b).

We can begin our days by asking God to speak to us through Scripture. We can purpose to study it regularly. We can keep it in front of our eyes with easy access on a phone. Remember, God’s eternal Word stands firm.
