So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. John 8:36

Why does it get easier and easier to sin the longer you do it?

Whenever we choose our way over God’s way it’s called sin. We sin because it feels good–because each of us would prefer our own way rather than God’s. ‘We have left God’s paths to follow our own,’ scripture points out (Isaiah 53:6a). When we first veer into any sin, it’s as if we’re stepping into wet concrete. ‘I can step out of this and clean up anytime I like,’ we tell ourselves. But we don’t step out. We stay longer and longer. Then before we realize it, the concrete has set. We’re stuck.

We thought we could get away with it, but the Proverbs ask, ‘Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire? Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet?’ (Proverbs 6:27-28) The answer is no. Perhaps it seems like you’ve gotten away with it. No one knows about that habit. Or maybe you know someone else who’s purposefully making choices that don’t please God. Why does their life seem to continue on, without a care? The Bible says: God ‘isn’t really being slow… as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent’ (2 Peter 3:9).

This is because the God of the Bible is a God of mercy. Scripture describes Him as ‘compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love’ (Psalm 103:8). The choice is yours: cry out for God’s compassion, mercy and forgiveness or go down in that bucket of concrete. Only Jesus can break you out, but if He sets you free, you are free indeed (John 8:36).
