God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. John 3:19-21

It’s the secret in the basement we’d just as soon leave there.

When Troy inherited his father’s house, he knew it needed updating. What he didn’t expect was that he’d discover mold throughout the basement! Black rot had permeated deep into the structure and needed addressing immediately or the whole house could collapse!

When God exposes sin in our lives, family, or community, it’s tempting to brush it off. We’re inclined to downplay its severity and maintain the status quo. However, when God brings sin to light, it’s not for the purpose of punishment, but rather a sign of His deep care for us. Like Troy, we risk far graver outcomes if we don’t confront issues and take immediate action! It’s not easy to face our sins, repent, and work towards healing. Acknowledging the problems we’d rather keep hidden is humbling and uncomfortable.

The Bible book of John says that “God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants” (John 3:19-21).

God uncovers our sin so that we can reconcile with Him. Are you open to God showing you the rotted areas in the basement of your life where His light and change is desperately needed? Are you open to hearing others share about problems in your family? Ask God to shine His light and reveal what’s holding you back from His fullness. When God exposes sin, it means He is moving in your life to bring you into His brilliant best for you.
